Beefeater Gin: gin with a London accent

You don?t get much more English than gin. Granted, the juniper-flavoured spirit originally comes from the Netherlands, but these day there are few Englishmen and women who haven?t got a taste for gin. Beefeater Gin takes the essence of Englishness and blends together with different botanicals to make a splendid gin.

Beefeater Gin is named after the guards of the Tower of London. Beefeaters, in the service of the Crown, have guarded the Tower for centuries and are a common sight in London tourism leaflets. Beefeaters? bright red, regal uniforms are iconic and instantly recognisable. Beefeater Gin, sticking to its roots, features a picture of a beefeater on every bottle. Beefeater Gin is a proud product of England, having been first distilled by James Burrough in the 1800s. The recipe has changed a little since then but Beefeater?s crisp, clean taste has remained.

Beefeater Gin is made from various botanicals which give the gin a well-balanced, totally natural flavour. Almond, angelica root, angelica seed, coriander seed, juniper, lemon peel, liquorice, Seville orange peel, and orris root are blended together and used to make Beefeater Gin. The botanicals and neutral grain spirit are combined and left to steep for a full 24 hours. After the steeping, the distillation begins and the spirit is heated so that it turns from liquid into vapour, and then back again. This stage can take up to 7 hours, ensuring that nothing is rushed. During distillation, the spirit vapour is separated into three different parts. The middle cut is used to make Beefeater Gin and then other two parts are discarded. Finally, the gin is mixed with water to reduce its strength and make it drinkable. The pure, softened water lowers Beefeater Gin?s alc. vol. to 40%.
