Germany meets Portugal in Gin Sul; the gin with a difference

The secret love-child of German gin distillation mastery and Portuguese flavour, Gin Sul is a small batch gin which stays true to its roots. The gin is produced in Hamburg using Portuguese ingredients and is a German man's tribute to the beautiful country. Perhaps the man was experiencing saudade, the Portuguese word for longing for times gone by. Remember that trip to the zoo with your grandparents when you were little? Or those long summer holidays when you could sleep in everyday? In this sense, saudade is the sad nostalgia felt when remembering earlier times which you know you can never have back.

Though not the most obvious combination ever, Hamburg and Portugal actually have a lot in common. One major talking point: the water. The huge Elbe is Hamburg's pride and joy with its choppy waves and glorious harbour, providing a backdrop to some of the city's best underground clubs. Portugal enjoys a slightly warmer climate with dramatic cliff-tops looking out onto the romantic Atlantic Ocean and its seagulls. Imagine all this in a gin and you have a basic idea of just how varied Gin Sul is.

Gin Sul combines Portuguese ingredients with German gin distillation

Using the finest ingredients, Gin Sul brings you a gin which is both traditional and surprising. The all-important water is extracted from the Lüneburger Heide near Hamburg using many wells which are up to 326 metres deep. The liquid is filtered naturally by sand and gravel under the earth's surface, ensuring its clarity and purity. Another key ingredient in Gin Sul is lemon from the West Algarve. These lemons are pretty big and give the gin its distinctive citrus flavour and fragrance, complemented perfectly by the rosemary and organic juniper.

But what really gives Gin Sul its edge is its secret ingredient: ladanum. Ladanum is a resin found in shrubs grown to the west of the Mediterranean Sea and is traditionally used in perfumes because of its glorious floral fragrance. The ancient method of harvesting ladanum is a little bit weird though ? Portuguese goat-herders drive their livestock through the bushes. The goats' fur catches the leaves from the shrubs and the intoxicating ladanum resin is then extracted. Believe it or not, ladanum is even referred to in the Book of Genesis as one of the best products around. This ingredient has clearly stood the test of time and gives Gin Sul a heavenly aroma, working with the lemon, rosemary, and juniper to create a fruity gin with an unmistakable fragrance.

The Portuguese-German elixir is packaged into a simple ivory bottle with striking blue text and a ship emblazoned proudly across the body, referring of course to Hamburg's ship-building tradition. The cork gives the bottle a rustic touch and offers a little contrast to the other spirits in your drinks cabinet.
