Tanqueray Gin, which is available to purchase in the online shop here at Urban Drinks, looks back on a history of over 180 years. Tanqueray was born in 1830 on Vine Street in Bloomsbury, when Charles Tanqueray launched his own distillery (swerving the clerical career that had been laid out for him in the process). It’s believed that the recipe still in use for the firm’s flagship London Dry Gin was finalised in around 1838. That makes the current version of Tanqueray London Dry about as esteemed and enduring a gin as one is likely to find. Tasting this gin makes that discovery even more stunning - Charles Tanqueray was a newcomer to the distilling business, and that he could have been responsible for a gin this smooth and finely balanced, in the 1830s, in his twenties, is quite incredible. Raise a toast for Mr. Tanqueray and his immortal gem of a gin!

Charles Tanqueray kicked the bucket in 1868, and his son stepped into his shoes to keep the gin production going. Tanqueray junior proved himself a trustworthy helmsman, and the family’s gin operation became increasingly successful, including in terms of exports to the colonies. In 1898, the firm merged with Gordons & Company, and the production base moved, though remaining in London. This is where Tanqueray continued to produce gin until 1941, when the distillery was almost entirely destroyed in air raids over the capital. One soldiering still managed to survive the Blitz virtually unscathed, and ‘Old Tom’ as it’s known, is still turning out premium gin at the current Tanqueray production facility in Cameron Bridge in Scotland.

Tanqueray Gin today

So much for the history of Tanqueray. Nowadays, the gin is produced by Diageo PLC, an industry giant that also counts other big brands like Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff among its products. Tanqueray is most popular in the USA - it’s the number one imported gin there. Hence Dr. Dre was able to come through to Snoop Dogg’s with a gang of Tanqueray. (Count Biggie, Tupac, and Mac Dre also among the hip-hop legends to have slipped the name Tanqueray into their tunes).

The Tanqueray Gin trio

The Tanqueray assortment includes their original London Dry Gin, made to the 1838 recipe, as well as Tanqueray No. Ten and Tanqueray Rangpur Lime. All of the recipes are closely guarded secrets. The original London Dry Gin is known to include four botanicals: coriander, juniper, angelica root, and liquorice. The second was produced with an eye more keenly aimed at the cocktail market, and boasts an extra citrus edge to liven up mixed drinks. Makes a top martini. Tanqeuray Rangpur Lime goes even further with the innovative botanical experiments, donating less space to juniper and more to a host of citrus fruits, as well as some pleasant herbal and light spicy notes. Whichever you prefer, from a classic juniper-centred London Dry Gin, a lemon-tinged martini specialist, or a wildly innovative and flavourful adventurer, Tanqueray has got you covered. As have we - all of the Tanqueray varieties are available to purchase in the online shop here at Urban Drinks!
