A&W Root Beer is one of the most instantly recognisable American drink brands, although in fact the A&W company is now based in Canada. A&W manufacture a root beer which is based on a traditional recipe, and is now available across Southeast Asia, Australia, Italy, and the UK as well as the US and Canada. A&W are owned by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group, who own a whole range of the most popular soft drink brands.

What drinks can you make with A&W Root Beer?

Although A&W Root Beer is a non-alcoholic soft drink, it can be used to make a range of tasty alcoholic drinks. It goes well with rum, as the sweetness and vanilla flavours of root beer matches up with the sweetness of rum. A dark, spiced rum like The Kraken is perfect for this. A&W Root Beer also goes with Jagermesiter, for a spicy treat for those who enjoy pungent herbal flavours. Naturally, all kinds of vodka can be added to root beer, as vodka has such a light and subtle flavour - but our personal favourite is the mix of A&W Root Beer with vanilla-flavoured vodka. Or for those who like a real punch in their drinks, try mixing root beer with Fireball Whiskey for a fiery, cinnamon drink.

There's also one very special drink which you can mix with A&W Root Beer - a RumChata root beer float. That's made by mixing 3 parts A&W Root Beer with 1 part RumChata, the horchata-based rum liqueur. This makes an amazing sweet, frothy, bubbly concoction which will take you back to childhood - but with a boozy twist! This won't work with all brands of root beer, as some brands are more acidic and so will make the RumChata curdle - but A&W is perfect for this!

You can also use A&W Root Beer in more elaborate cocktails, like a Ramos Gin Fizz with root beer. Mixing root beer with an egg white sounds strange, but the fluffy, fizzy, bubbly result both looks amazing and gives the drink a soft, full feel. You can mix root beer with amaro or even bourbon if you have these in your home bar. And finally, don't forget that you can always kick it really old school, and add a scoop of soft vanilla ice cream to your A&W for a spectacular root beer float.

A&W Root Beer has been around since 1919

The history of A&W is a long one - in fact, the founder, Roy W. Allen, opened his root beer stand by the side of the road in California all the way back in 1919. The locals loved his sweet treat, and it soon spread across the rest of California. Allen decided that he needed some help to manage his growing business, so he brought partner Frank Wright on board. They combined the letters in their names to form the brand name A&W. Now this brand is available in Europe too, through our online store.
