Colt 45, the iconic American malt liquor
Colt 45 is one of the most popular malt liquors in the United States. Introduced by the National Brewing Company in 1963 it is named after the American Football Player Jerry Hill- not the famous pistol which shares its name. Hill was playing for the Baltimore Colts at the time of the drink’s creation and was the running back with number 45.
Colt 45’s history and legendary pop culture status
During the Depression and later during World War II rationing, brewers didn’t have enough malt to make beer and so malt liquor was invented with its higher alcohol content. Colt 45, was created around 30 years later. After noticing its popularity in African-American neighbourhoods, Colt 45 began to market its drink exclusively towards this market, leading to its ties to the rap and hip-hop genre in the 80s and 90s.
Ever since it was launched, Colt 45 has been a huge part of pop culture. The label has had a long-time advertising association with actor Billy Dee Williams, who has been on many of their billboards and television ad. Rap star Afroman recently showed his dedication to the drink by renaming his song "Crazy Rap" to "Colt 45" shortly after it was launched.

The only problem with Colt 45 is that it goes down TOO easily...if a bottle lasts more than 5 minutes it's an off day!
