Picon Amer is an integral part of French drinking culture and is an incredibly popular aperitif in northern France and parts of Belgium. The drink delights with a base of orange peel, gentian and cinchona bark, which are carefully mixed with sugar and caramel syrup and give the drink its dark color.

The historic drink has existed since the beginning of the 19th century
The forefather of the Picon Amer, the Amer African, was developed by Gaétan Picon in the 19th century. As with many quinine-containing drinks, this creation was originally a kind of medicine designed to help the colonial army fight a bad fever in the hot climate of Algeria.
