Pijökel has become somewhat of a classic in the Berliner booze scene. There is possibly some local patriotism at play, as Pijökel is produced in the borough of Prenzlauer Berg. The term Pijökel is Low German for "small thing" - in this case, this small thing definitely packs a punch!
It is based on a recipe by an apothecary called Kuno Grote. His son, Gabriel Grote, was resolved to carry on Kuno's legacy and started to produce Pijökel 55. For this organic cordial, he uses as little sugar as possible so that it can still be called a liqueur. Apart from that, it relies on fully developed notes of cinnamon, vanilla, lesser galangal, almonds and ginger. A pleasantly warm drink will glide down your throat like butter. It is best enjoyed neat at room temperature or as a shot from a chilled glass!
If you want to get to know Pijökel 55 with no strings attached, we recommend checking out this small version of the "small thing" with only 4 cl!
