Past

At the beginning of the 19th century, John Walker and his mother started selling the popular alcohol in their general store. Slowly, the young John was feeling his way towards the production methods for whisky at that time. While the Scotch was still very rough at the beginning, the young businessman kept optimising the taste of the first Johnnie Walker by using special blending methods, which until then had only been used in tea production.
After Johnnie Walker's death in 1857, his son Alexander took over the business and with it the production of the dark spirit. The whisky producers profited greatly from the French louse plague in the Cognac region and the resulting drop in sales between 1858 and 1863. Furthermore, a new law that enabled Scotch producers to use grain whiskies for blending ensured that sales figures in the Scottish shop continued to rise.
Driven by the great success, a second branch was opened in London in 1880. Offices in Australia, South Africa and other shops in the United Kingdom followed. Alexander Walker's sons took over the family whisky business after his death. As there were two of them, George and Alexander II divided the work between marketing and production. With this professional team at its head, the Johnnie Walker company bought up numerous Scottish distilleries in the period from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century.

Present

A major break came with the merger of the Distillers Company Ltd. (D.C.L.) with John Walker & Sons in 1925. With the merger of D.C.L. and Arthur Bell & Sons in 1987, the company became United Distillers. After further mergers, the former John Walkers & Sons company now belongs to the Diageo megacorporation.
The sales figures of Johnnie Walker Whisky are also gigantic. Well over 170 million litres were sold in the 2012 financial year. Serving suggestion

A high-quality whisky such as that from Johnnie Walker is ideal for pure tasting. Even ice should be avoided, as it can destroy light aromas. At most, a small amount of still water can be useful to release new aromas.
Eating alongside the whisky tasting can be helpful as it has a neutralising effect. For example, a mild whisky is an excellent accompaniment to ham-wrapped grissini, while a peaty whisky goes well with dark bread as well as smoked salmon. Fruity whiskies combine very well with chocolate – it can bring out unexpected flavours from the noble drink. In general, whisky and chocolate have long been considered a dream couple.
